Marsh Rice Rats are “Marsh Oryzomys” are semi-aquatic rats that are common across Tennessee in Wetland habitat. They are the primary host of the Bayou Virus, the second most common agent of hantavirus infections in the United States. “Oryza” is Greek for “rice”, “Mys” is Greek for “mouse”, and “Palustris” is Latin for “marshy”. Marsh Rats are opportunistic feeders feeding on a wide array of vegetation, seeds, and animal matter including insects, amphibians, bird eggs, birds, turtles, and fish. Latrine sites will often be found outside the burrow, easily identifying a Marsh Rat nest. They can be found in urban areas that provide adequate food, shelter, and water.
