Raccoons In Yard During The Day

Raccoons that are seen during the day often causes panic, as the raccoon is thought to be sick or rabid. However in residential areas, raccoons will often move throughout the day, especially if food, shelter, and water is readily available. Raccoons will often increase daytime activity to provide food for young. Availability of bird seed from feeders, pet food, koi ponds, and compost piles will often attract the attention of a foraging raccoon. Seeing a raccoon during the day does not mean the raccoon is sick or rabid. There are several key factors that may indicate the raccoon is sick, or rabid.

• Raccoons with discharge from eyes or mouth.
• Raccoons wandering in circles, or erratic movements.
• Raccoons not afraid of human activity.
• Raccoons slow moving or staggering.
• Raccoons with a sick appearance, or missing or matted hair.
• Raccoons making repeated vocal high pitched sounds.
• Raccoons approaching people and pets.

While these are warning signs to look out for sick raccoons, remember, normal reactions of wildlife is to run away.

I Observed A Raccoon During The Day, Is It Rabid?

Raccoons in residential areas will present complications with human – wildlife conflicts. Observing a raccoon during the day is normal, but seeing a raccoon that appears ill or aggressive, can be from rabies, canine distemper, and feline parvovirus. These can all be a risk to pets, as dogs and cats should be kept away. There are health risks to people as well as raccoon infections are present. Do not approach a wild raccoon, even if young. Do not feed raccoons. If you have had contact with a raccoon or droppings, contact your local Health Department or Animal Control Agency.
